Yes, there were clouds, how ever, this is relatively a clear night compare to the rest of the month night. The weather forecast predict a storm coming Sunday to the southern California area. which is the next day. This make this Saturday morning the period of the calm before the storm.

The temperature was around the lower 50s degree F. (around 10 degree Celsius.) The upper wind direction were from west to east. The winds near the ground were blowing from the East. The humidity was high.

Here is a close up look of the planets Mercury and Venus in the same picture frame over the San Fernando Valley:

As the Sunrise moment was approaching, I observed the marine layer over both the Simi Valley and the San Fernando Valley. The Earth shadow casting on the pink background sky was beautiful as always. It never gets old.

I spend another 2 hours around the peak and observed the changed of the marine layer as it flow over both valleys and between hills tops.

Full Moon Rise

Article header_simple

Full Moon of January 2016 was on the 23rd. The view as always was magnificent. The clouds were still around the high mountains of Angeles forest, and covering a lot of the horizon from all directions.

My observation of the Full Moon rise on that day were taken from a small  town in southern California called Little Rock.

Right after Sunset, The moon was peaking up through the clouds from the eastern horizon.

The weather was clearing up in general, the southern California area had a wet week with rain. The humidity through the evening was decreasing and reaching below 50%.

The Angeles Forest mountains were covered with snow. A welcome change after the severe drought that was present in the region.

Through the evening, the clouds were around the mountains peaks. Another stop was made in Lake Palmdale at the turn out of Aerospace Valley Monument for more few pictures.

The view were breath taken, however, the high speed wind and the clouds covering the Moon made the Astronomical observation a little difficult. Yet, we still manged to take few more close up pictures of the lake and it’s Wind mill.

The trip I was taken was with my wife, my sister, nieces and nephew. My sister wanted to show us the San Fernando Valley view from Sandy Canyon road which lay in the Santa Clarita/ Canyon Country area.

The view from the top was great, and the clouds were clearing up, and the Full Moon was lighten up the mountains and canyons.

That was is for the night. The weather was cooled and windy.

The temperature varied with elevation, and it ranged from the higher 40s F degree to the lower 30s F (between 0 C and 8 C degree)

Here are a couple of pictures of the Astronomer logger enjoying the views and the night.

Full Moon Halo January 2016

Article header_simple

This month’s full Moon was accompanied with light fog clouds. This photo was taken in Santa Clarita area in California. The time this photo was taken was nearly an hour before midnight January 22nd/23rd 2016.

The humidity was nearly 90% with wind around 1 or 2 mile per hour (2 kilometer per hour) from the south east. The visibility condition according to the weather station agency was about 10 miles (16 Kilometer)  with expectation of morning rain.

The condition allowed for this phenomena to occur to the observer and created this beautiful view.

It was really great to see this astronomical weather phenomena. The weather was preventing from observing the planets alignment at dawn. Comet Catalina was also very difficult to observe.

Here is another Photo of Full Moon Halo phenomena.

I hope more observers or casual sky gazer have enjoyed this rare weather phenomena. As for now, Enjoy the pictures.

The Pleiades painting

Paintings header_013

This painting is inspired by the celestial object the Pleiades, Also known as the seven sisters. The Pleiades have many amazing stories across many cutlers, an it’s scientific data is as interesting as the myth and lore behind it.

The Pleiades, the seven sisters. Also known as object M45.

The Pleiades, the seven sisters. Also known as object M45.

This painting will be part of a long list of the Messier objects, which is a list consist of nearly 110 objects.

I will be happy if I finish the list before the end of the year!

I started the list with the object I most observed and easiest to pick up from the sky. It is a winter object, but can be observe before sunrise as early as the Summer.

The object in Arabic called Al thuria. This is a name for a hanging lamp, not any form of lamp, but decorative lamp light that hang from the ceiling. Another lore of this object is that those stars are a beautiful young girl, and the girl is running away from the Star Aldebaran which is a very wealthy old man.

A note worth mentioning about the western lore of this object is, Atlas and Pleione are the stars at the bottom lifting the seven sisters, their daughters, and protecting them.

I will write more in details in an encyclopedic post for this object, as for now, enjoy the artistic surreal feeling that the painting gives off.

Splendid Sunrise

Paintings header_013

Another place, same galaxy. There are many Sunrises, and Sunsets of nearly 4 hundred billion splendid star that can cast a view in infinite number of objects.

This view is but one that is happening right now somewhere as you are reading this words, and it is not fiction. Maybe the painting is a work of fiction, but the reality is stranger than fiction, and this scene is happening in a a great number in our galaxy alone, and there are many more, MORE galaxies out there.

The inspiration of the landscape comes from hikes around the south west states. The Joshua Tree National park and the Rocky peak mountains had a great inspiration to it among many other landscape across California. The ring planet although t looks like Saturn, it is not.

Enjoy this planet which is in the making, like ours, and I hope to upload many more soon.

Pisces Constellation Painting (Zodiac Set)

Paintings header_013

This painting is of the constellation Pisces, one of the zodiac constellations of the celestial sphere.

Pisces Constellation Painting (Zodiac Set)

Pisces Constellation Painting (Zodiac Set)

The night sky has many stars, and they form pattern and shapes like clouds. Unlike clouds, the pattern can stay without noticeable change to the observer eye for thousands of years.

Some shapes and patterns are recognized worldwide, the pattern called constellations. Constellations are shapes of star patterns that are agreed upon by large number of people. This will give ease to one observer to another to define an area in the night sky.

The constellation that lay on the apparent path of the Sun and planets in the celestial sphere of the night sky are called zodiac constellations. The path called the ecliptic path. And there are 13 of them recognized by stargazers and astronomers, however, 12 are used for art and lore heavily. 12 is a better number for grouping them and easier to refer to them with the months of the year.

Pisces is normally the 12th constellation listed in the zodiac constellation. The best time to observe this constellation is in  Autumn (Fall) session around the month of October where it is found in the eastern horizon after Sunset and stay visible for the rest of the night until it reaches the western horizon around Sunrise.

Enjoy
