Penumbral Lunar Eclipse February 10th/11th 2017

Although it wasn’t total, the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse put a great show from south west Asia from Kuwait perspective.

This is arguably the most prominent Lunar eclipse in 2017 for much of the world. Australia and the oceanic region not as lucky for this one.

An image was taken from Kuwait after the Moon enter Earth’s penumbra. the image was taken around 4:00 am local time or 1:00 UTC February 11th 2017.

February 11th 2017 – Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

The temperature was around 11 Celsius degree (52 Fahrenheit degree) and the winds were 13~14 kph NNW (8 mph). Humidity at 64%  with pressure of 1016 hPa. Visibility was 9 km (~5.5 miles).

Light pollution at the town did have a major impact on the Moon, but prevented any comfortable observation of the comet comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova.

Jupiter was above the southern horizon above the star Spica. The four satellites of Jupiter were all visible with very simple modest optics such is the camera lens zoom. Io and Ganymede were on the right and Europa, Callisto on the left.

Snow Moon 2017 Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

This is a quick reminder of tonight’s Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The Phenomena will be visible Most of Asia, All of Africa, and All of South America, and nearly all of North America. It was calculated from sources to be around 10 Feb 2017, 22:34:14 UTC.

Snow Moon, Full Moon of 10 February 2017. Nearly 6~5 hours before the Eclipse.

It was taken from Al Qurain, Kuwait. with temperature of 14 Celsius degree with wind of SSW wind of 8 kph  (~58 Fahrenheit degree, 5 mph) and humidity of 56%.

Enjoy the Moon and the Comet right after this early morning in dawn and the couple next morning as well if you are privilege with a dark site. Regardless the location, it is worth trying looking for.

Five planets alignment

Today January 30th 2016 was the morning where five planets alignments occurred. The Planets Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter.

Yes, there were clouds, how ever, this is relatively a clear night compare to the rest of the month night. The weather forecast predict a storm coming Sunday to the southern California area. which is the next day. This make this Saturday morning the period of the calm before the storm.

The temperature was around the lower 50s degree F. (around 10 degree Celsius.) The upper wind direction were from west to east. The winds near the ground were blowing from the East. The humidity was high.

As the Sunrise moment was approaching, I observed the marine layer over both the Simi Valley and the San Fernando Valley. The Earth shadow casting on the pink background sky was beautiful as always. It never gets old.

Soon after at this time of the day at 6:52 am in local time, the Sun rose from the east another day.

I spend another 2 hours around the peak and observed the changed of the marine layer as it flow over both valleys and between hills tops.

Full Moon Rise

Full Moon of January 2016 was on the 23rd. The view as always was magnificent. The clouds were still around the high mountains of Angeles forest, and covering a lot of the horizon from all directions.

My observation of the Full Moon rise on that day were taken from a small  town in southern California called Little Rock.

Right after Sunset, The moon was peaking up through the clouds from the eastern horizon.

The weather was clearing up in general, the southern California area had a wet week with rain. The humidity through the evening was decreasing and reaching below 50%.

The Angeles Forest mountains were covered with snow. A welcome change after the severe drought that was present in the region.

Through the evening, the clouds were around the mountains peaks. Another stop was made in Lake Palmdale at the turn out of Aerospace Valley Monument for more few pictures.

The view were breath taken, however, the high speed wind and the clouds covering the Moon made the Astronomical observation a little difficult. Yet, we still manged to take few more close up pictures of the lake and it’s Wind mill.

The trip I was taken was with my wife, my sister, nieces and nephew. My sister wanted to show us the San Fernando Valley view from Sandy Canyon road which lay in the Santa Clarita/ Canyon Country area.

The view from the top was great, and the clouds were clearing up, and the Full Moon was lighten up the mountains and canyons.

That was is for the night. The weather was cooled and windy.

The temperature varied with elevation, and it ranged from the higher 40s F degree to the lower 30s F (between 0 C and 8 C degree)

Full Moon Halo January 2016

This month’s full Moon was accompanied with light fog clouds. This photo was taken in Santa Clarita area in California. The time this photo was taken was nearly an hour before midnight January 22nd/23rd 2016.

The humidity was nearly 90% with wind around 1 or 2 mile per hour (2 kilometer per hour) from the south east. The visibility condition according to the weather station agency was about 10 miles (16 Kilometer)  with expectation of morning rain.

The condition allowed for this phenomena to occur to the observer and created this beautiful view.

It was really great to see this astronomical weather phenomena. The weather was preventing from observing the planets alignment at dawn. Comet Catalina was also very difficult to observe.

Comet Catalina Dec2015

Comet Catalina (C/2013 US10) is a comet discovered in 2013 and is expected to give a beautiful show from observers on planet earth perspective on the months of December 2015 and January 2016.

Comet C/2013 US10  is a morning comet, and the observation took place in the early hours of dawn toward the eastern horizon.

Observation of this comet from California was a bit difficult due to the weather condition and the brightness of the Comet. Comet Catalina was expected to be a naked eye comet, how ever, the comet didn’t reach the magnitude 4 in the scale of apparent brightness as was expected. Today, when these pictures were taken, the apparent magnitude was about 6~7 and many low clouds near the eastern horizon had played a role in making the observations more challenging.

This morning the comet made a small conjunction with the Moon crescent and the planet Venus as shown in the pictures. The comet is too dim to be observed with the naked eye, but the view is beautiful with telescopic aids or a camera.

The brightness of the morning dawn before Sunrise was taken over, and making the background sky brighter than the Comet. However, more pictures was manged to be taken.

The Moon and Venus made a beautiful display by them self.

I hope the weather will be more cooperative in the next few days and that the comet will have a good display show for it’s observers this season.

As for now, here is more pictures of the Moon, Venus, and the comet, with the dawn glare in the back.

The observation took place between 2 hours and an hour before Sunrise.

Wind were around 4~9 mile per hour (7 to 14 KPH) and the temperature didn’t exceeded 66F (~18C degree) and was in the low 50F degrees at some point.

Moonset

This night/morning, I was observing the triple conjunction and the planet Mercury. The observation were registered in the Log. Meanwhile, the Moon was nearly full Moon, how ever, it was setting an hour earlier than Sunrise.

I took many images from the Eastern horizon, and I couldn’t miss to observe the Moon setting, so I changed my Camera direction to the west, and captured the final moments of the Moon setting behind the western mountains peak.

I love how if you look carefully whether visually or through the camera lens, or the image, you can find the colors of the Sunset. It is beautiful how the colors of the Sunset or Sunrise can be reflected back to earth through the Moon in this special condition.

With better zoom and different camera set up, The Moon can show a lot of the Sun light.

as the moon approach the mountain peak from my preoperative, I set up the exposure to minimum to have a better view of the Moon surface features as it is setting behind the mountain and the radio antenna.

 The Moonset has it’s own magic, and like the Sunset, it gives the observer a beautiful calm feeling.

I changed the camera direction and start photographing the planets alignments again, and later on, the Sunrise.

Planets at Dawn

In the early morning hours of October the 26th, the planets Jupiter, Venus, and mars aligned toward the direction of the eastern horizon and produce a beautiful triple planet conjunction show.

Followed later before Sunrise, the planet Mercury will join the morning planetary alignment

The observation took place at Santa Susana pass, between the local two valleys. The weather condition didn’t prevent this night sky observation even though the valley been having cloudy nights during this month.

Orion constellation was at a good altitude above the southern horizon followed by Canis Major constellation.

The temperature was great, It was in the low 60s F or higher 50s F  (17~13 C degree)with light winds.

There were few shooting stars passed by. The most significant observed that morning were slicing the big dipper area coming from south to the Northern horizon. There was one caught on an image while photographing the conjunction of the three planets.

The shooting star is most likely from the Orionids meteor shower that is still active.

Orion was covered by passing clouds from time to time.

At this point of the night he Moon was reaching the western Horizon.

The Pleiades were stunning as usual with Aldebaran following it. At this point of the night, Mercury was near rising, I had to take a couple more pictures of the triple conjunction and obseved the Moon set on the western horizon.

The Big Dipper was up high with it’s pattern of this time of the year and night.

Venus and Jupiter conjunction 2015

This summer, the planets Venus and Jupiter once again aligned so close to each other, within a degree of visual angular distance. From the west coast of north America, the view was beautiful, right after Sunset. The Moon was also near full, and rose after. The images were taken on July-1st-2015. The alignment lasted for few days.

Here is an image toward the western horizon. The weather was cloudy at the beginning.

 As usually, the planet Venus was the 1st bright object in night sky. The celestial canvas showed the planet Venus, and right after Jupiter.

The clouds then covered the planets for few minutes. Which gave me enough time to make contact on the Amateur Radio simplex net meeting of the local HAM radio club. Another activity I am getting more involved in recently.

You can even notice the Moons of Jupiter in the images taken. Ganymede was on top left of the planet Jupiter, and the other three, Europa, Io, Callisto, were bottom left.

The weather was humid, but at the summit, it was very windy, not cold. Which is a typical July weather.

The moon phase was near .99, or luminosity of 98%.

The evening was a pleasant one, as usually the case of a good stargazing session.

Again, the planets alignment did represent the view of two eyes looking down on Earth. The view never gets old.

The first Lunar eclipse of the year was on the morning of April 4th 2015.  For south California, the Moon was visible most of it 6 hour eclipse duration that started on 2.01 AM and ended just after it set around 6.46 AM at Sunrise.

The town near by, Simi valley, had the normal light pollution. The weather wasn’t humid enough to lower the quality of observation. There were little to no clouds and the temperature around the 15s Celsius degrees (60s F degree). The winds were less than 18 on the valley near the ground. However, from the Santa Susana Pass in which those photographs were taken, the  winds were at high speed, and increased the chill factor. The direction of the wind weren’t coherent near the trail head, however, from the peak, the winds coming from North, North East.

The eclipse was crawling on the Moon, as those set of pictures shows. The pictures were taken in different exposures. The longer exposure to show the redness color on the Moon, and the shorter exposure to show the brightness and shadow differences during the events.

The next set of images were taken after 5 Am and it show the end of the eclipse as the bright light from the Sun start to get near.

One of the most beautiful thing in this eclipse form this location is the chances to observe the phenomena and photograph it at Dawn light and colors. The eclipse looked so beautiful with the morning light and sunrise colors.

Aside from this, the Sunrise was beautiful as always, and while  the eclipse was happening, I get the chances to observe The new Nova at Sagittarius and Comet Love joy close to the Cassiopeia constellation on Sunrise time.
